Fire Warden Training

Safety Director. The Building Manager directs the life safety program for the building. They are responsible for providing the appropriate life safety information to the team and conducting or hosting trainings.

Safety Manager. Building Security is the person most familiar with building systems and is the main communication link with the Fire Department upon arrival at the building. Building Engineers additionally assist. The Safety Manager is responsible for ensuring emergency procedures are followed, participates in investigations with fire officials, and returns the building systems to normal after the “all clear” is announced.

Assistants / Alternates: Working under the direction of their Fire Warden(s), employees of each Tenant are responsible to search the Tenant premises and restrooms to account for all personnel prior to an evacuation of the building. They should be familiar with all of the duties of the floor warden in case they must assume this role, especially in the event the Fire Warden is absent.

Fire Warden:  Tenants are responsible for assigning who of their employees would be responsible for supervising and monitoring the safe and efficient evacuation of all employees of the Tenant in the event of an emergency situation, herein referred to as “Fire Warden” or “Floor Warden”. The floor warden(s) should be the last person(s) in the single-file line exiting down the stairs.

Floor Wardens are the key to the success of the entire plan. Their responsibilities are:

  • Be available during normal periods of occupancy, as they are chosen to take charge and direct their employees un emergency situations.
  • To assign a minimum of one (1) Assistant/Alternate able to perform the duties in the event of the Fire Warden’s absence.
  • Full-floor tenants and other large companies will need to appoint a sufficient number of Fire Wardens, Alternates and/or Assistants to help maintain the situation and ensure that their company’s emergency plan is carried out.
  • Know the location of, and routes to, exits.
  • Perform “walk-throughs” of emergency exits and location of fire alarm pull stations with all employees.
  • Be familiar with their Tenant space and entire floor.
  • Know the normal number of persons in their company/suite or their employees’ normal schedules; Maintain a list to quickly grab-and-go in case of an evacuation.
  • Be aware of employees who are disabled or will require assistance to evacuate the building and descend the stairwells.
  • Supply building management with an updated Fire Warden & Emergency Assistance Form as changes occur; Ensure building management is kept up-to-date at all times.
  • Assign a “buddy” to each disabled person. This may or may not be an appointed “Fire Warden Assistant”.
  • Perform periodic inspections to ensure exit doors are not propped open or exits are not obstructed.
  • Be familiar with all building emergency systems and their locations on your floor and in the garage.
  •  Once they confirm everyone from their suite has been accounted for, locate the Building Management Staff at the Safe Meeting Place and inform them that their suite is “all clear”.

Authorized Tenant Representatives or Floor/Fire Wardens are responsible to notify building management of changes to their assigned floor warden(s) contacts and any employees that may require additional assistance in cases of emergencies. To do so, they must submit an updated “Fire Warden & Emergency Assistance” form via email to ALIIPLACE@AVISONYOUNG.COM.

See “Fire Warden & Emergency Assistance Form” for Tenants’ completion under the Services > Forms section of this website.

Safe Meeting Place

In case of emergency requiring building evacuation, Alii Place’s designated Safe Meeting Place is located on the State Capitol grounds’ grass lawn, located across from Alii Place on Richards Street (pictured below).

The Safe Meeting Place Map has been divided into different “zones” by floor number (pictured below). Please note that each employee should go to their floor’s designated area on the map to help their company’s fire warden to ensure that all employees are accounted for.

The numbering above reflects an approximation of the “zone” that each employee should report to. Please do not block any walkways or sidewalk while the at the safe meeting place.

Fire Wardens are responsible to locate the Building Management Staff (wearing a neon yellow/green vest) at the Safe Meeting Place when and to confirm your suite was successfully evacuated and all employees have been accounted for.

Please wait in your floor’s designated meeting zone until an “all clear” has been given by either Building Management Staff (primarily) or the Honolulu Fire Department (when necessary).

The “all clear” will NOT be given until all Floor Wardens have reported to the building management staff at the safe meeting place that, confirmed, everyone from all suites has been accounted for.

A printable version of the “Safe Meeting Place Map” is accessible from the Services > Forms section of this website.

Building Safety / Fire Warden Training

Building management hosts one Fire Drill annually, routinely in the month of May. The goal of our annual Fire Life Safety Training is to inform and provide your employees, Fire Wardens, and Alternates best tips to a safe, rapid, and effective company response in an emergency.

The fire drill date is provided to Tenants ahead of time by building memo to ensure those working onsite are prepared. However, we do NOT disclose the estimated start time of the dill; The purpose of the drill is to practice how to safely and effectively respond in the event of an unannounced fire alarm, unexpected need to evacuate, etc.

As with a real emergency or any unannounced fire alarm, tenants must immediately evacuate to the safe meeting place and not return to the building until the “all clear” have been given by Building Management of the Honolulu Fire Department. (Good news about the fire drill is…you can expect some ice-cream after!!! Woohoo!)

Prior to our Annual Fire Drill, building management hosts a Building Safety/Fire Warden Training which is guided by our security provider, Allied Universal. This virtual training is vital for all tenants, floor wardens, their assistants, new employees to the building, those who only come onsite every so often, and individuals who may need assistance to exit. We strongly encourage active participation in this annual training to ensure all tenants can be knowledgeable and prepared in case of an emergency, and so that we may answer any questions that may arise. (And, rest assured, they are good questions to have!)

Below is a slideshow of our most recent Training as a year-round resource. Please feel free to contact our office with any questions.
